Marantz PM5005 & CD5005 w/ Wharfedale Diamond 220 Speakers
Marantz PM5005 Integrated Amplifier
New to the Marantz collection, this excellent entry-level integrated amplifier breaks all the rules. That’s because it’s the first in its class to offer current feedback architecture – a feature that normally is reserved for the more expensive models.
This technology provides very fast and accurate signal handling, which results in perfectly balanced stereo sound reproduction as well as a very open and precise sound stage. It’s also been recently enhanced with performance–optimising discrete audio circuitry and fine-tuning components. In addition, this year’s model looks a little more stylish than last year’s, thanks to new elegant knob design. On top of that, it comes with a new remote and a new low-power stand-by and auto stand-by mode. But back to being an amp: the PM5005 offers 40W per channel into 8 ohm or 55W into 4 ohm, and includes a metal chassis and a front metal panel to ensure a very rigid and solid base. It also has a Phono MM equaliser, as well as a Source Direct functionality to ensure shortest signal paths. Without doubt, the PM5005 has raised the performance bar in the so-called entry level area. Great sound. Amazing versatility.
Marantz CD5005 CD Player
The new CD5005 incorporates everything its predecessor, the CD5004, offered including the Marantz-own HDAM-SA2, but this year it features an upgraded DAC CS4398 and new CD mechanism – both taken from its big brother, the CD6005.
As you’d expect, it plays CD, CD-R and CD-RW discs as well as MP3 and WMA files. It includes customised components for sound tuning and an extra-reliable CD transport mechanism. The Audio EX(clusive) mode further enhances sound quality by switching off functions such as digital output and pitch control when not in use. The random play function will give you another option to explore your music in a new way.
Also new for this year is an upgraded remote controller as well as low-power stand-by and auto stand-by modes. In addition, high-grade gold-plated analogue outputs guarantee best connectivity, while a well-defined headphone output, and an easy to read display rounds off this excellent player.
Wharfedale Diamond 220 Speakers
The Diamond 220 from Wharfedale replaces the company's 121 as the Diamond series' entry-level bookshelf model. This newly developed version of what was already a highly capable loudspeaker sees a number of aesthetic and performance upgrades.
These upgrades include the integration of a stronger and more anti-resonant cabiner mateiral, utilising particleboard sandwiched between MDF (as opposed to chipboard + MDF found with the older 121's cabinet). This means that the vinyl wrap of the speaker unit can be applied to the speaker more easily, resulting in an improved finish.
The bass driver is formed from woven Kevlar and has ribs for added rigidity and the speaker uses a revised magnet system for even tighter control of the sound. Vocals sound more realistic than you'd believe for a speaker of this price and the bass is upbeat and never lagging behind the rest of the mix. At the other end of the scale the treble unit is surrounded by a deeply dished waveguide. This helps to improve the imaging and 'width' of sound, making it easier to pick out individual instruments. The overall sound quality is still fantastically well-balanced and natural with a sense of realism that is difficult to beat at this price point.
The sonic integrity and capability of the speaker has also been improved, thanks to an upgraded crossover network and bass motor system, while the new slot-loaded port provides an even stronger level of sonic detail.
